Schizophrenia refers to a condition and to a spectrum of disorders that all involve a disconnection from reality, including hallucinations and delusions. It also affects a person’s ability to recognize the symptoms they have of this condition. It’s a severe condition, but is treatable, and many people with it can still live happy, fulfilling lives. Schizophrenia refers to both a single condition and a spectrum of conditions that fall under the category of psychotic disorders. These are conditions where a person experiences some form of “disconnection” from reality. Those disconnections can take several different forms.Although the words "split" and "mind" are derived from the Greek for "split" and "mind," none of the illnesses classified as schizophrenia include multiple personalities. Instead, the ailment known as dissociative identity disorder covers several personalities (which was previously known as multiple personality disorder). Dissociative disorders are a subset of that condition.
