A psychiatrist is a medical professional who focuses on the study, management, and diagnosis of mental health issues. Like most aspects of human functioning, mental health has a separate professional medical community. The only mental health practitioners who are permitted to prescribe psychiatric drugs are psychiatrists, while other mental health professionals may do so when directed by a psychiatrist. Although they might not have the appropriate knowledge to identify all mental health issues, family doctors and other general practise medical professionals are permitted to administer psychiatric medications. Psychiatrists are required to go to medical school. They do a four-year psychiatric residency after graduating from medical school during which they gain knowledge of the diagnosis and management of mental health issues. Inpatient rehabilitation centres, psychiatric wards of regular hospitals, and psychiatric hospitals are all common places where psychiatric residencies are completed.
